File Payne Scherer & File PLLC has been a mainstay of the West Virginia legal community since the early 1900s. Ashton File, a native of Buckingham County, Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1901. Upon admission to the bar, he worked in Mount Hope with his uncle Henry J. Tucker, a lawyer and engineer. In 1902, Ashton File moved to Raleigh County where he opened a legal practice with Thomas K. Laing. He was joined in 1904 by his brother, William H. File, who was later a Circuit Judge. More than 100 years later, the law office created by Ashton File continues to exist and thrive. The File family continues to honor the tradition of service and the dedication to excellence begun so long ago by Ashton. There has always been a member of the File family in the firm. Over the years, the name of the firm has changed to reflect its changing membership, but traditions have not. The firm and its member attorneys' experience and dedication to the strictest standards of the profession have earned File Payne Scherer & File PLLC the highest rating in Martindale-Hubbell and membership in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. The practice extends throughout southern West Virginia.

Strong ties in the community, together with an appreciation for the community's founding values, have made File Payne Scherer & File PLLC the natural choice of numerous respected clients.

Firm attorneys enjoy extensive experience in the areas of law that affect business. Their knowledge will ensure that all options are understood and weighed in providing the best lawful advantage for the client at every step. File Payne Scherer & File PLLC uses mediation, negotiation and litigation to achieve the best, most cost effective result for the client.
